28 - Great Horned Owls begin nesting

While some Great Horned Owls (Bubo virginianus) begin nesting earlier than the above date, and a few slacking laggards wait until February to begin laying, the vast majority of owl families at this time are sitting on their nests brooding their annual clutch of eggs and eagerly anticipating the joys of owl parenthood. As a consequence their calls are now only occasionally heard.
